Frequently Asked Questions

Our Plants

  • Genetic modification is a technique that changes the genetic makeup of cells by mechanically altering genetic material outside of natural reproductive methods. It produces new combinations of plant characteristics that do not occur in nature. This is different from natural hybridized seeds (F1 Hybrids), which use natural methods of cross pollination between two related plants.

  • No. Kawahara Nurseries does not support or grow any GMO vegetables.

  • Our programs are designed around EPA guidelines (Environmental Protection Agency) and we have successfully eliminated pesticides containing Neonicotinoids since 2014. You can also help control pests by spraying or dusting your plants with natural products/commercial insecticidal soap that can be found at your local Nursery and specific to your area, keeping in mind that it's virtually impossible to completely eliminate all pests.

Buying Through Kawahara

  • We have a direct to consumer plant shop Plants by Post where we carry house plants and succulents. Click the “Buy Direct” button on our navigation header to access the Plants by Post website. However, our wholesale plants are available for wholesale purchasing to licensed landscapers, independent garden centers and retailers throughout California.

  • If you are interested in becoming a wholesale customer, please submit a customer inquiry form and someone from our sales team will be in contact with you. Please understand that not all requests for wholesale orders may be met; however, we’d like to hear from you to determine how you fit into our model and how we can assist you. Commitment will be based upon compatibility with prospective retailer, current workload and timeline.

  • Our Availability Lists are provided to current customers. However, you can get an overview of the plants we produce by visiting the “Our Plants” page here.

Other Common Questions

  • Kawahara Nurseries does not sell seeds, liners or plug trays.

  • Unfortunately, due to safety and trade regulations we cannot give tours to the general public.

  • The Proposition 65 Warning is a legal requirement in the state of California, intended to notify consumers about potential exposure to chemicals that may pose a risk of harm. It's important to understand that the presence of this warning doesn't necessarily mean the product is unsafe or in violation of any health standards because it depends on many factors including if you are consuming it, long-term exposure, etc. Our team is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our customers and the warning is a precautionary measure, and its inclusion on the label is a regulatory requirement for products sold in California so you will see Prop 65 Warnings in many business locations. We continue to comply with the new requirements, relevant to wood dust, pesticides, plastic containers, and crystalline silica from perlite, in which the amounts present would be far below the level for a Prop 65 Warning, but again, the warning is referenced to help Californians make informed decisions with their purchases.
